Frequently Asked Questions
Add 18 to your birth year. Kindergarten starts the fall you turn 5, and kindergarten plus grades 1 through 12 is 13 school years, so graduation lands in the spring 18 years after you were born. If your birthday falls in September to December you probably missed the cut-off and graduated a year later, so add 19 instead.
Most states require a child to have turned 5 by 1 September to start kindergarten that fall. A child born in August starts a full school year before a child born the following month, even though they are only weeks apart in age. Each birth-year page shows both timelines side by side.
The grade numbers are the US system. Every birth-year page also lists the matching year group for England and Wales, Australia, Canada, and India, because those systems number their years differently even when students are the same age.
Each page includes an alternative-timelines table covering a skipped grade, a repeated grade, a delayed start, and a gap year before college, with the graduation year already worked out for each.
