How Weighted Grades Work
Weighted grades assign different importance levels to various assignment categories. For example, if tests are worth 40% and homework is worth 20%, a test score impacts your final grade twice as much as a homework score. This system allows teachers to emphasize mastery demonstrated on major assessments while still giving credit for daily work.
How to Calculate Weighted Grades
To calculate your weighted grade manually:
- Find your average in each category
- Multiply each average by its weight percentage (as a decimal)
- Add all the weighted scores together
Example: If Homework (20%) = 95% and Tests (40%) = 80%, your weighted grade so far is: (0.95 × 20) + (0.80 × 40) = 19 + 32 = 51 points out of 60 possible.
