How to calculate your grade

Almost every class grade is a weighted average. Each category — homework, quizzes, tests, projects, the final exam — carries a percentage from your syllabus, and your overall grade is the sum of each category score multiplied by its weight.

Grade = Σ (category score × category weight) ÷ Σ (weights entered) × 100
  1. 1

    Find your weights

Copy the category percentages straight from your syllabus, or from the grade-breakdown panel in Canvas, Blackboard, PowerSchool, or Google Classroom.

  2. 2

    Enter each score

Type the average you currently have in each category. Leave anything ungraded blank — the calculator will not count it against you.

  3. 3

    Read your running grade

The result is your grade over the weight graded so far, which is the same number your gradebook shows mid-semester.

  4. 4

    Solve for the final

Pick a target letter grade and the calculator returns the exact score you need on everything still ungraded.

Worked example

Suppose homework is worth 20% and you have an 88%, quizzes are worth 15% and you have a 91%, and tests are worth 40% and you have an 83%. The final exam (25%) has not happened yet.

CategoryScoreWeightPoints earned
Homework88%20%17.6
Quizzes91%15%13.65
Tests83%40%33.2
Graded so far75%64.45

64.45 ÷ 75 × 100 = 85.93%, a B. To finish the class with an A (90%) you would need 90 − 64.45 = 25.55 points from a final worth 25, which is 102.2% — just out of reach. A B is comfortably secure.

Percentage to letter grade

The calculator uses the standard US plus/minus scale below. If your school uses different cutoffs, see the full grading scale comparison.
