How to Use This Calculator
Enter your current grade in the class (before the final), the weight of your final exam as a percentage, and select your target grade. The calculator will instantly show you what score you need on your final to achieve that grade.
This calculator is built for questions like "what grade do I need on my final?", "can I still pass?", and "what final exam score gets me an A?" If your course uses category weights before the final, start with the weighted grade calculator, then bring that current grade back here — or solve everything in one place with the grade calculator with weights, which combines every assignment row with a weighted final-exam solver.
The Final Grade Formula
Required Final Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) / Final WeightExample: If your current grade is 85%, your final is worth 20%, and you want a 90% (A) in the class:
Required = (90 - 85 × 0.80) / 0.20 = (90 - 68) / 0.20 = 110%
This means an A would require 110% on the final, which isn't possible without extra credit.
Tips for Final Exam Success
- Start studying early - cramming the night before is less effective
- Review past tests and quizzes to identify your weak areas
- Use practice problems and study guides provided by your teacher
- Get enough sleep the night before - rest improves memory and focus
- If you're struggling, ask your teacher about office hours or tutoring
Frequently Asked Questions
Use the formula: Required Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. Enter your current grade and final exam weight above, and the calculator will show you exactly what you need.
If the calculator shows you need more than 100%, that target grade is mathematically impossible with your current standing. Consider aiming for a lower but still achievable grade, or talk to your teacher about extra credit opportunities.
Check your class syllabus, which is usually provided at the beginning of the course. You can also ask your teacher or look in your learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom, etc.) for the grade breakdown.
Your current grade is your overall class grade with all assignments, tests, and quizzes factored in, but before the final exam. Most online gradebooks show this as your "current" or "running" grade.
It depends on your current grade and how much the final is worth. Use this calculator to see different scenarios - even if you score 0% on the final, you might still pass if your current grade is high enough and the final weight is low enough.
Some classes have policies where the final can replace a low test score. In this case, calculate both scenarios: with and without the replacement, then see which gives you a better outcome.
