Your birthday month changes the answer

A birth year on its own is not quite enough. Most states require a child to have turned 5 by 1 September to start kindergarten that fall, so people born in 2016 split into two groups a full school year apart.

Born January – August 2016

Class of 2034

Turned 5 before the cut-off and started kindergarten in fall 2021. In 2026-27 they are in 5th Grade.

Born September – December 2016

Class of 2035

Missed the cut-off and started kindergarten in fall 2022. In 2026-27 they are in 4th Grade.

Everything below the fold uses the January–August timeline. If you were born late in the year, add one to every school year shown.

  • Australia: Late January to December, so a school year sits inside one calendar year. Year 12 certificate and ATAR at the end of Year 12.
  • Canada: September to June, the same shape as the US year. Provincial secondary school diploma at the end of Grade 12.
  • India: April to March, so a school year straddles two calendar years. Class 10 and Class 12 board exams.
