Your birthday month changes the answer

A birth year on its own is not quite enough. Most states require a child to have turned 5 by 1 September to start kindergarten that fall, so people born in 2009 split into two groups a full school year apart.

Born January – August 2009

Class of 2027

Turned 5 before the cut-off and started kindergarten in fall 2014. In 2026-27 they are in 12th Grade.

Born September – December 2009

Class of 2028

Missed the cut-off and started kindergarten in fall 2015. In 2026-27 they are in 11th Grade.

Everything below the fold uses the January–August timeline. If you were born late in the year, add one to every school year shown.
